Pegasus’ Song

Born by the water’s edge was I,
Borne by the waves so dark and deep,
Wet were the winds that gurgled by,
Green were the groves that swelled my sleep,
Salt in the strange seas, salt in the cliffs,
Salt in the tufts of the far-off skiffs,
Sight beyond seeing, night beyond day,
Eyried and eyeless I wound my way.

But freed from the land and sea and air,
High above hoping, twilling between
Demons and soaring, swooping and dare,
Streaking from shadows, silence unseen,
Proud to be cloud-vaulting, galloping through,
Gladly and gallantly, carrying you,
Thunders and wonders through sundering sky,
Taunting Apollo as we pass by.
